The Ancient Welsh Ocular Sovereignty Protocol™

Ocular

Welcome, seeker.

You are looking at a screen right now. You have been looking at a screen for some time.

Somewhere behind your eyes, a strain is building that your optician could probably explain perfectly well, but no pair of £180 blue-light glasses has ever actually fixed.

We have a different answer.

It is older than glass.

The Problem: You Have Forgotten How to See

The bards of these islands did not need filters.

Taliesin, singing at the courts of kings, saw further with his own two eyes than you will ever see through a 6.1-inch panel refreshing at 120Hz.

The Mabinogion is full of people seeing things clearly: prophecy, transformation, the shape of the future in a cauldron's surface, and not one of them needed a screen-time report to tell them they'd been looking too long.

Somewhere along the way, we stopped trusting our own sight and started outsourcing it.

You wake, and before you have looked at the sky, you have looked at a phone.

You have given your first sight of the day to a notification.

This is not vision.

This is surveillance of the self, conducted by the self, on behalf of several large American companies.

We have a name for what you're experiencing*: Digital Second Sight Displacement. It sounds ancient. It sounds serious. Mostly it means your eyes are tired and you've been doom-scrolling since 6am.

the fine print * We made this up in the time it took to write this sentence. It is, however, a genuinely accurate description of your last four mornings.

The Ancient Wisdom

In Welsh bardic tradition, the awen, the flowing spirit of inspiration and insight, was said to arrive unbidden, through stillness, attention, and actually looking at something long enough to see it properly.

Modern practitioners have improved the system considerably by giving it a checkout page.

Cerridwen's cauldron didn't have a blue-light filter.

It had three drops, a burnt thumb, and a boy who saw more of the future in one moment of proper attention than most of us manage in a year of screens.

We cannot promise you the awen. We can promise you a very nice candle.

The Protocol

The Ancient Welsh Ocular Sovereignty Protocol™ reclaims what the bards always knew and Silicon Valley would very much prefer you forgot:

  1. First light goes to the sky, not the screen. Look out of a window before you look at a phone.
  2. Twenty minutes, once a day, spent looking at something more than six feet away that isn't trying to sell you something.
  3. One evening a week, no screens after dark. Candlelight only, in the old way, whether you have any particular need for a candle or not.

That is the protocol.

There is a fourth step, technically, which is buying the tiered products below, but we've listed it separately because even we think three genuine steps and a shop is a more honest ratio than most of this industry manages.

The Tiers

Hearth Tier — €44.99

Bardic Tier — €89.99

Everything in Hearth, plus:

Second Sight Circle — €229.99

Testimonials

"I did the first light exercise. I looked at the sky before I looked at my phone. It was grey. I looked at my phone anyway after about four seconds. Still counts, I think." — Gareth, 54, Newly Sighted

"I bought the candle. I have not used the candle. It is a lovely candle to own." — Imogen, 44, In Possession Of A Candle

"I did the dusk walk with Gareth over video call. He stood in a field for twenty minutes describing a hedge. I have never felt so at peace or so confused." — Cordelia, 41, Hedge-Adjacent

"I bought the Second Sight Circle tier for the certificate. I have framed it. My optician asked what it was. I did not have a good answer. I still don't." — Gerald, 67, Framed

Gareth works here. He also left this review. We didn't stop him.

The Disclaimer

The Ancient Welsh Ocular Sovereignty Protocol™ has not been evaluated by any bard, druid, optician, or ophthalmologist, living or dead.

Taliesin would almost certainly not recognise any of this as his tradition. We are choosing to interpret his silence, being unavailable for comment on account of having died in roughly the sixth century, as tacit approval.

Looking at the sky before you look at your phone will not restore your ancestral sight. It will, however, mean you've looked at the sky, which is more than most mornings currently manage.

The three real steps are free.

The candle is optional.

The certificate is not a medical device, and neither, regrettably, is the hedge.
